2000年URiTAのサポートギターを経て
2001年よりアコースティックギターの弾き語り活動を開始。
その歌詞,楽曲,演奏スタイルはいわゆる"音楽"と単純には形容し難い
あらゆるジャンルが融合された特異な世界感を有している。
梅津和時,鬼怒無月,窪田晴男(パール兄弟),COBA,ピアニカ前田,
KlustarTU,FarmersMarket,saigenji,松崎ナオ
などのアーティストから賞賛され
「現代ギター誌」においては自主制作CDRが
ギタリスト:鬼怒無月氏よりギターノーベル賞を受賞。
2004年、King Crimsonのメンバーを有すKlustarTU
世界屈指の超絶技巧集団：FarmersMarket来日公演のOpeningActを務め
10月には仏人ソロパフォーマーNosfellの誘いを受け
フランスでの5公演(うちワンマン２本)を成功させる。
2005年、10月には梅津和時氏とのデュオ形態によるドイツ公演と
リトアニアのヴィリニュス・ジャズフェスティバルへの出演が決定している。

まず唖然とし、耳が釘付けになりました。
何か聴いてはイケナイものを聴いてしまったような不穏な後味。
なんだろうコレは？
シュワンクマイエルの美しき悪意、天野可淡人形のまがまがしさ？…そして再び聴き返す。
そこには、人間離れしたギターの超絶技巧もさることながら
七変化のトランスセクシュアルな声色表情
書庫の臭いにも似た象徴的詩の世界
不安定に浮遊しながら艶かしい媚薬として解決するその音楽…
とにかく、こんな知的でフェティッシュで耽美な弾き語りは
いまだかつて耳にしたことありませんでした。
その余韻はいつしか確信となって
先日東京で行ったぼくの機械歌唱ライブで
ギター演奏サポートを強引にお願いしたわけですが（当日が初対面）
案の定、耽美な蜜と毒に満ちた素晴らしい演奏でした。

After having specialized in graphic design for many years, Hiviya Katan, in 2001,
embarked suddenly on a career as guitarist-singer under the impact
of an inspirational encounter with a certain great musician---
“It was like a moment of epiphany…",as Katan later recalled the crucial incident.
Katan’s music apparently resists any kind of simple definition or easy
categorization. The surrealistic, literary-minded lyrics,
the vocals displaying a wide range of singing voices,
the “genera mixta” tunes combining progressive rock with pop, jazz and ethnic music,
the skilled guitar-play with highly original style,
not to mention the“hermaphrodite”looks and the compelling way of talking
that perfectly match his own brand of performing style---
all of which contributes to the creation of an
idiosyncratic world-view
(or“Weltanschauung”to use his favorite term)
incorporating the elements of virtually all art forms,
thus making it impossible to describe his“music" simply as such.
He has received much accolade from fellow musicians and artists
both at home and from overseas;
to name but a few, Kazutoki Umezu(Sax., KIKIBAND etc.),
Natsuki Kido (G., KIKIBAND) ,Haruo Kubota (G.,Pearl Brothers), COBA (Aco),
Nao Matsuzaki (Vo.),and saigenji (Vo.&G.):
the Finnish band
KlustarTU including the members of the King Crimson
and the ultra-technical Norwegian group Farmers Market.
His self-published CDR album was awarded the Guitar Nobel Prize
from Natsuki Kido (G., KIKIBAND) in the Contemporary
Guitar Magazine.
In 2004, Katan successfully did opening performances
in the Japan tours of KlustarTU and Farmers Market,
and in October of the same
year he visited France
for a series of gigs (two of those were a one-man show)
through the invitation of the French solo-performer Nosfell.
*The pseudonym“Katan”is taken respectfully from the late Katan Amano,
the legendary doll-maker who has had a great impact on Hiviya.
